I know, I know ! I promised a weekly blog but since I last put finger to keyboard I've been rushed off my feet at work (violins please!)
So, it's been 3 weeks since my last blog post (sounds a bit like a confessional doesn't it? For the catholics amongst you). I've carried on with the walking around the country lanes of the south wirral...........found a few new routes which alleviates the boredom including a pleasant one along the river. My preferred late night route is a local circuit of about 11km and during one particularly unpleasant sojourn in the dark and wet I realised that I walked past 17 pubs!!! Lord knows in my hey day I couldn't walk past one! How times change!
I had one minor hiccup a couple of weeks ago when the second fruit of my loins (the indomitable George) went on a school outwood bound trip for 4 days. The lazy little toe-rag couldn't be bothered looking for his own cheapy walking boots so figured that his ageing, forgetful father probably wouldn't miss his lovely comfy expensive boots for a few day!! I walked in trainers..............big mistake!!! Even my blisters had blisters!!!
Oh how we laughed............not!
I had to go to Edinburgh for a couple of days (no, not to meet my mate the Pope) and stayed in a hotel just below the castle...........the food at dinner was diabolical but breakfast... MY GOD.......no wonder the Scots die in their 40's....my breakfast plate represented a slaughter in the farmyard...........pork sausages (pig), bacon (pig), steak (cow), haggis (sheep), black pudding (?? you tell me, no, on 2nd thoughts don't) and eggs (chickens)
Finally the cross-trainer arrived from Amazon.............but only after Rottweiller Julie (wifey) let the people at Home Delivery and Amazon know that she was a little upset with them!!! (that's very cleaned up to protect the vulnerable...) Then guess what?? A second cross trainer arrived!Where's that e-bay account?
Last week required a friday night break from exercise and careful eating....Mikey (first fruit of loins) was 16 and a night out with family, some of his friends, the wonderful Uncle John, and some fab friends from the world of radio (Kev, Katie and Rick) ensued. San Carlos in Liverpool a bit of a "see and be seen" place, but lively, saw a couple of ex footy players, herbert the celebrity hairdresser (my his skin is sooooo tight I wonder how he manages that at his age? he he.) Great family night out pics on facebook.
This walking on the flat is ok but I suppose I'd better give some serious thought to walking some hills soon. My mate Harris (you'd hate him, 57, retired headmaster, eats like a pig drinks like a fish and probably 8 stone in his boxers, runs up mountains like a goat) is going to take me to Snowdonia for a "serious" walk ohho!
I thought I'd like to take off to my place in the French Alps for a couple of weekend walks before the snows (and tourists) come I'm trying to persuade Harris and Starky (he's an estate agent but he's not as slippery as some and occasionally forgets and lets the truth slip out so we'll forgive him) to come with me.
The money continues to roll in, I've had lots of "promises" (sadly all financial) and I'm beginning to wonder if I should up my target to £15000...
Radio going well, apparently the show is now attracting serious sponsors, you can listen to it as a pod cast if you like by clicking on the "City Talk" logo over to the left of the page.
Well now that confession is over I'll do my best to get back to weekly updates.............
Talk soon Mike x
He's been described as middle-aged, past his prime and as mad as a box of frogs! Now here's your chance to share Dr Mike Scott's experiences of preparing for the ardures of walking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu
SO WHAT'S THIS ALL ABOUT?
Well, here I am; a 56 year old busy General Surgeon whose life seems to revolve around work and family (mainly the former!) Every year I try to set myself a "challenge", this could be mental or physical, home or work orientated. However it must be said that the goals are usually based around "me". So this year I thought that I'd try to do something for others. However I can't escape from the "me" thing and so I've decided to combine a personal ambition with a money raising charitable cause. I've wanted to visit the ancient temple at Machu Picchu in Peru ever since I've known it existed, but I didn't want to do it on buses and trains but by walking the Inca Trail. So when I saw the opportunity of achieving this goal on the Macmillan Cancer Charity web-site I jumped at the chance. Hence come next May (2011) I shall be trekking the Inca trail!! I'm hoping to raise at least £10,000. Now, I'm not the fittest or youngest guy in the world and whilst I can't get any younger I can get fitter. So, I've set myself a gruelling 39 week fitness regime with the added goals of weight loss(and waist-line shrinkage!). The added benefit is that I'm hoping to get legs that will ski the tails off the younger and fitter members of my "boys ski trip"! This blog is to share my trials, tribulations, successes (and failures) Mike x
HOW DO I CONTRIBUTE?
HOW DO I CONTRIBUTE?
Seriously guys ALL donations are gratefully received.
No donation is too small ......... nor too large, haha :-)
Whilst you can always stop me in the street and thrust wads of cash into my pockets probably the best way of sponsoring me is by clicking on the following link:

BACK TO WORK!!
Week 3, only 36 more to go......
Going back to work was a bit of a shock to the system! In the last 17 years I have never taken 2 weeks off work in one go and so easing back into the rough and tumble of busy surgical practice has always been easy-peasy. Slightly different this week! My body has not wanted to wake up or get up at 06.00 and as a consequence the espresso machine has taken some serious hammer!
Anyway, 6 operating lists, 5 clinics and a weekend on call have sorted me out. Sadly it has impacted a bit on the exercise programme I've only managed 4 walks and Amazon have seriously let me down with my new cross-trainer in that their delivery people seem totally incapable of finding my house!
The whole walking thing has been a bit of a revelation. Speaking as someone who only ever saw walking as a means of getting from A to B (and then only when the car was broken) I have to say that I'm really beginning to enjoy it! I've noticed houses, fields, all sorts of things really that I've driven past for the past 17 years. I really will have to find some more routes as I think the locals suspect that I'm some sort of scally eyeing up their houses when I wander past late at night! I also suppose that I'd better start walking up some hills soon. Not much altitude sickness to be had on the Wirral!
Oh yes, thanks for the tip about the talcum powder. My bum's much better now. I wish the tip had arrived before I splashed out £40 on some special silver lined undies! (which were rubbish anyway).
The sponsor money has continued to flow in. Nearly £5000 now pledged. Thank you each and every one of you! I think that I may adjust my target up to £15000!!
I mentioned my walk on the radio show this week (CityTalk 105.9 fm) and I'm hoping that maybe Radio City (96.7) will put it on their web site this week. For those of you who have time, the show is on CityTalk every thursday lunchtime from 12-1. This week represented a new twist in that Mick Coyle, the regular presenter who normally does all the links and the clever "radio stuff" handed over the reins to me completely! It was a bit more difficult than I thought it might be but I can only get better and I've been practicing in the car on the way to work.
Have heard a few horror stories about the Inca Trail this week, it's made me more determined than ever to get fit enough to actually enjoy it.
Please let people know about this blog as I'm hoping to attract the occasional advertiser which will further swell the coffers..............

We all have to start somewhere!
I've never written a blog before so you're all going to have to bear with me! I'm sure I'll get the hang of it eventually!
Back in May (2010) I saw an article in a sunday newspaper talking about walking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. It said that the walk was arduous, but breathtakingly beautiful and once completed gave the trekker a tremendous feeling of achievement (although that could of course be explained by the altitude sickness).
I, like everyone, have a list of "20 places to see before I die" and Machu Picchu is on my list. The newspaper article went on to explain that a number of charities arranged Inca Trail walks, the deal being that prospective walkers have to guarantee a certain sum of money and in return are permitted to participate! I looked into this further and discovered that Macmillan Cancer Support was one such charity. I looked on their web site (see link on this page) and duly applied.
Having been accepted, Macmillan sent me an information pack including training programmes, sponsor forms etc. Only once these arrived did it start to dawn on me that I might have bitten off slightly more than I could chew.......
The first small matter to address was my decreasing level of fitness and increasing body mass index and waistline. More later.....
The second issue was to start raising money. As suggested by Macmillan I set up a "just giving" account. I then started assaulting friends, colleagues, neighbours, patients, people in the street and Uncle Tom Cobbley and his mates......This is where I started to become a real pain in the bum. I sent out my links via e-mail (personal and work), via Facebook, via text message and through snailmail post, so some people got as many as 4 versions of my initial "begging" letter!!!
The response has been overwhelming. In the first 2 weeks I have raised nearly £4000 . Thank you everyone!
I wont mention names to save everyones blushes but I have had pledges ranging from £1 to £1000!!! Every single amount is important and received with total gratitude......Thank you Mike Zeiderman for suggesting that I just went on a diet and instead of messing about I should just write Macmillan a cheque for £10,000!!!
On friday 13th I went out on a bit of a "hooley" to a posh restaurant in Liverpool with my family and some friends from Radio City (96.7 fm) It was my final "last supper" ritual before starting my fitness regime............I got absolutely bladdered but fortunately all the others were so bad that I don't think anyone really noticed! If they did, I'm so sorry if I was a bit over the top!
The following day I flew to Spain for a couple of weeks sunshine in Albir. Starting that evening (still with the vestiges of an "I'm never going to drink again.....ever"...headache) I did my first walk in my shiney new walking boots. The bay from the south end of Albir to the north end of Altea is beautiful and is exactly 7.5 km. So there and back is 15km! Boy did I have some cracking blisters that first day.... I went to the pharmacy and was given some contraption that you required a degree in bioengineering to fit but it certainly helped my sore heels!
I did that walk every morning for the following 12 days then it was time to come home. Walking around the lanes of the south wirral is not as picturesque as the coastline of the Costa but I've carried on doing a 1 1/2 hour walk for the last 3 days. Do I feel better? Not yet! But I'm quite determined and who knows by next May I may just fit into those snake skin rock star jeans that I bought in Santa Monica in 1994...........another story for another day.........
I know that I've gone on a bit with this first entry but I'll try to be more concise in the future weekly blog entries.
I'd just like to leave you with one question,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, does everyone's bum get so sweaty when walking?? If so what's the answer????
Talk to you next week
